Playoff and Tie break procedure


A. There will be playoff games for 1st place ties.

In case of a tie for first place in the Tournament, a play-off will be played that may consist of up to two stages.


Stage I

If there are two players tied for first place they will play a match of two blitz games (5 min 3 sec).

In case of a 3-6-way tie, a round-robin blitz tournament will be played (5 min 3 sec).


Stage II (played in case of a tie for the first place after Stage I)

If there are two players tied they will play a match of two blitz games (3 min 2 sec).

If it’s still a draw, then use Armageddon, White 5 min, black 4 mins, if draw, black wins. (TD will determine color to play)


B.  No play off games for 2nd or 3rd place.

Ties are broken using Mathematical Tie-breaks to determine 2nd or 3rd place:

Swiss event: 

1)     Head-to-head (if all those tied played each other).

2)     Buchholz (Sum of all scores of opponents).

3)     Buchholz cut 1 (Sum of all scores of opponents except the lowest point scorer).

4)     Sonneborn-Berger (Sum of all scores of opponents you won against and half the scores of opponents you drew).

5)     Most wins.

6)     Most games with black.

Round Robin event:

1)     Head-to-head (if all those tied played each other).

2)     Sonneborn-Berger (Sum of all scores of opponents you won against and half the scores of opponents you drew.)

3)     Koya system (Total points scored against opponents who scored at least 50%).

4)     Most wins.

5)    Most games with black
