This is a Canadian Youth Chess Championship Qualifier (July 6-10, 2025 in Ottawa, ON ). Players who earn half of their total points (e.g. 2.5 in 5 rounds) will qualify for the event. More info can be found at the link below:

Restrictions:

- Only players who have solid knowledge of the chess rules should register. Note: two illegal moves will lead to loss of a game. The FIDE Laws of Chess can be found here: https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/E012023

- Prior to register for the tournament, please make sure you have renewed your 2023-2024 membership or sign up to become a member via link:

Schedule: 9:15am – 9:45am Registration/Check-in.

                  10:00am Tournament begins and the finishing time depends on the number of participants.

U-8   (Born after Jan 1, 2018)

U-10 (Born after Jan 1, 2016)

U-12 (Born after Jan 1, 2014)

U-14 (Born after Jan 1, 2012)

U-16 (Born after Jan 1, 2010)

U-18 (Born after Jan 1, 2008) (Will be combined with U16 if not enough participants for a sectional)

*Birthdate is required for registration to verify group but will not be shown on the website


Format: 

-  CFC rated. 5 round Swiss, Game in 90 minutes 30 seconds/move.

- FIDE Rated for U-10 and above

- Players must record all their moves. Assistance sheets will be provided upon request. 

-No agreed upon draws until move 30
-30 minute forefeit time

  1. Byes:
    • Up to 2 half-point byes are allowed for the first 3 rounds (requested in advance).
    • All other byes are scored as zero points.
    • A last-round bye counts as withdrawing from the event.
    • The byes policy can be at the discretion of the organizer, who has the right to decide and enforce their own rules regarding byes.
  2. Bye Limit: The total number of byes cannot exceed 50% of the event's rounds.

Saturday, Feb 7:

On-site check-in: 9:15am – 9:45am

Rounds 1-3: 10:00am, 2:00pm, 6:00pm or ASAP


Sunday, Feb 8:

Rounds 4-5: 10:00am, 2:00pm or ASAP

Prizes in each section

1st place: free entry to 2025 AYCC in corresponding section,  1st place trophy.

2nd place: free entry to 2025 AYCC in corresponding section, 2nd place trophy.

3rd place: 3rd place trophy.

Top girl in each section:  free entry in corresponding section to 2025 AYCC and a trophy

*AYCC Entry prizes only available to Albertans but out of province players allowed to compete

NOTE:

We have limited volunteers onsite. Parents are solely responsible for the safety and security of the players in between rounds and after the tournament has completed.
