Qualifier for Alberta Chess Challenge (April 8, 2023 in Red Deer) AND Canadian Youth Chess Championships (July 19 to 22, 2023 in Calgary)
Players who earning half of the total points (e.g. 2.5 points out of 5 rounds) will be able to qualify for both events.
Restrictions:
- This tournament is open to players Grade 12 and below.
- Only players who have solid knowledge of the chess rules should register. Note: two illegal moves will lead to loss of a game.
- The maximium capacity for this event is 70 players due to venue capacity constraint.
- Prior to register for the

Start Time: 1PM on
January 15, 2023.
Venue: Renert School
at 14 Royal Vista Link NW, Calgary. The venue is in the portable building on
the north side of the main building.
Schedule: 1:00pm – 1:30pm Registration/Check-in.
1:30pm Tournament begins and the finishing time depends on the number
of participants. In general, we expect the tournament should finish around 5:30PM.

Format: 12
Sections (Grades 1-12). The
exact format of each section will depend on the number of participants but players
should expect to play 5 games (players in kindergarten or below should register for grade 1).

Time control: 25 minute and 5 second increment.
Special rules: No agreed draws are allowed before move
25. Players are not allowed to talk to anyone (including parents, coaches,
and other participants) except the TD during their games. It is forbidden
for players to have cell phones, or other electronic communication, computer,
or media devices in the tournament room.

(grade): immediately after the completion of the last
round
All the other
participants will receive colourful chess pieces.
2023 Alberta Chess
Challenge will be held in Red Deer on April 8th. Travel grant holders must
provide receipts to be reimbursed for their travel expenses.
To be eligible for
travel grants, a player must participate a minimum of 3 CJCC monthly events (tournaments
or chess schools) between September 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023.
Entry fee: Annual Membership $10. Tournament fee is $27 ($1.50 is for CYCC qualification fee which will be submitted to the CFC).
Discount: $3 sibling discount.
Registration: Register using the “Register” button at the top of the page by 10:00PM on January 14th
(Saturday) or the maximum capacity of 70 reached. Late registration and onsite registration will NOT be
permitted.
NOTE:
We have limited volunteers onsite. Parents are solely responsibility for the safety and security of the players in between rounds and after the tournament has completed. Also, we ask you please kindly notify the volunteers at the front desk if you decide to pick up your kids before all rounds completed.
